# What does the optional Fab CLI collect locally?

The Fab CLI can read local Codex rollout files and save usage evidence in a private local directory. Its capture and watch operations discard prompt and tool contents. The saved evidence still contains metadata, so treat the output as private.

That metadata includes source file paths, response and conversation identifiers, model and effort settings, timestamps, and token counters. The collector uses supported per-request records. Repeated records are deduplicated, while conflicting or malformed evidence is reported as incomplete.

Capture reads a selected file or directory once. Watch scans for changed local files while its process runs. Local collection makes no additional model call and does not upload the captured records. Publishing usage is a separate, explicit operation with Account and Issue bindings.

A partial file, an unsupported format, or missing counters can leave coverage unknown. Such evidence must not be read as complete zero usage. Unknown models also remain unpriced when no rate is available.

The output directory must be private. The collector rejects directories with group or other-user permission bits set and refuses a symbolic link in place of the directory. It does not inspect additional access rules such as filesystem ACLs. Check who can access the saved files on your computer. Source paths and identifiers can remain sensitive even when message contents have been removed.

The web dashboard does not require this collector. Its Cortex-based context estimate and the optional local usage evidence have different sources and limits.
